What Is IFS-Informed Therapy? A Starting Point for Adults in Michigan

You can want change and still feel hesitant about starting therapy. You might be ready to speak openly while also wondering whether you will be understood. You do not need a polished explanation of what is wrong before reaching out.

What does IFS-informed mean?

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a therapy model that describes inner experience in terms of different “parts.” In this model, even difficult reactions can have protective intentions. The approach emphasizes curiosity and compassion toward these experiences rather than trying to eliminate them.

IFS-informed individual therapy draws on this perspective. The phrase describes an approach; it does not, by itself, establish that a clinician holds IFS certification. You can ask a therapist about their training and how they use the model.

You can start with an everyday moment

Imagine agreeing to another responsibility when you already feel stretched. Later, you feel frustrated with yourself. This is an illustrative example, not a client story. It offers a concrete starting point for a conversation: What happened? What did you want to say? What made saying it difficult?

You do not have to arrive knowing the answers or using therapy terminology. A recent conversation, a recurring worry, or a decision you keep putting off can help you explain what you would like support with.

Questions worth bringing to a consultation

Ask how the therapist would approach your concerns, what sessions might involve, and how you will decide together whether the work is helping. You can also ask what happens if an exercise does not feel comfortable or if you would prefer a different way of talking about your experience.

Consider your own priorities before the call. Would you like more room to speak honestly, help understanding recurring patterns, or support making a specific change? These goals do not have to be final. They simply give the conversation a place to begin.

Online individual therapy in Michigan

Rochester Virtual Counseling Services offers IFS-informed individual therapy with Jason Thompson, LPC, for adults in Michigan, with online services also available in Georgia and South Carolina. Private-pay sessions are $150 for 50 minutes.

A free 15-minute consultation is an opportunity to discuss what you are looking for and ask about fit, scheduling, and next steps. You can begin with a brief message; detailed personal history is not needed in your initial email.
